SLIPPERY ROCK — The Slippery Rock University softball team will join thousands of other walkers at the Canfield Fairgrounds in Youngstown in a charity event to raise money for the American Diabetes Association.
Step Out: Walk to Fight Diabetes is a nationwide event sponsored by the ADA. SRU softball coach Vashion Johnson said the team hopes to raise $1,000 money and set up an online site for the cause.
The Rock softball team will host the ADA Fall Softball Tournament Sept. 25.
SACRAMENTO, Calif. — Clinton Bonetti, who will be a fifth grader in the Butler School District, finished in third place in the shot put in his age division at the recent USATF National Junior Olympics Championships.Jordan Geist, a sixth-grader in the South Butler School District, placed fourth in the boys discus; Ava Bonetti, a Butler sophomore, was 20th in the girls discus and Rachel Konieczny, also a sophomore at Butler, was 32nd in the girls 800-meter run.
SAN FRANCISCO (AP) — The San Francisco Giants made another move for the stretch run Friday, acquiring veteran outfielder Jose Guillen and cash considerations from the Kansas City Royals in exchange for a player to be named later.The Giants haven't been to the playoffs since 2003 and were in the NL wild-card chase until mid-September last season. Getting over the hump in 2010 to end the six-year drought is the franchise's top priority.The Giants will be Guillen's 10th major league team in 14 seasons.
The AVP is spiking the rest of this year's professional beach volleyball tour because of financial troubles that left it scrambling for investors to fund the second half of the season.-The tour announced the decision on Friday after a conference call among AVP officials to discuss its money woes.Players had been warned of the troubles last month. Beijing Olympic gold medalist Todd Rogers says he wasn't surprised by the news that "the AVP has run out of money."
DENVER (AP) — The Milwaukee Brewers have released outfielder Jody Gerut.Gerut was placed on the 15-day disabled list May 27 with a left heel bruise. He was on a rehab assignment in Arizona, the Brewers Rookie League affiliate, when he was activated Friday and given his unconditional release.The 32-year-old Gerut, whoplayed briefly for the Pittsburgh Pirates, was in his second season with Milwaukee. He was hitting .197 with two home runs in 32 games this season.
