Holtgraver grabs points lead despite bad night

Sprint driver Danny Holtgraver led the feature race through the first eight laps before wrecking at Lernerville Speedway on Friday. Despite not finishing the feature race, Holtgraver grabbed the points lead with two weeks remaining.
Driver can't finish Sprint feature, but tops standings

BUFFALO TWP — Jack Sodeman Jr. got the win. Danny Holtgraver got the points lead — and would gladly trade places.

Primed to assume a big lead over Ed Lynch Jr. in the Sprint car points race Friday night at Lernerville Speedway, Holtgraver took a DNF in the feature. He'll take a 7-point lead, unofficially, in the points standings with two weeks remaining.

"At least I've got the lead. But this could have been so much better," the Pittsburgh driver of the No. D4 car said.

Holtgraver began the night trailing Lynch by 13 points in the standings. Lynch is racing at the World of Outlaws Knoxville Nationals this weekend and Holtgraver picked up 10 points by winning his heat race.

He then drew the pole for the feature and had a solid lead eight laps into the race — when disaster struck.

Holtgraver was preparing to pass Dan Kuriger entering Turn 3 when Kuriger's No. 08 car slid up toward the top of the track and into his path.

"I did all I could do to miss him," Holtgraver said. "Obviously, he didn't see me. He didn't know I was there.

"But when we hit, he ripped my front end out and my left tire got torn out. My car just rolled over and I was done."

Sodeman Jr. was running second at the time. He took advantage of Holtgraver's misfortune to capture his second feature win at Lernerville this year and his eighth triumph overall in 2010.

"I feel bad for Danny. That was just plain bad luck," Sodeman Jr. said. "I know how he's feeling right now. It took me 17 years to win a race here. It's frustrating."

Sodeman Jr., a former Butler resident now living in North Jackson, Ohio, didn't win in his own car Friday. He blew an engine last week and borrowed a friend's car that would have been idle otherwise.

It's not the points race that was on Holtgraver's mind Friday.

It was victory lane.

He has eight top-three finishes here this season without finding his first career Lernerville feature triumph.

"I want to win here so bad," Holtgraver said. "I feel for my crew because they've worked so hard to put me in a good car. And we had a great car tonight.

"Having the pole, racing in clean air ... We were good enough to win tonight. I'm not saying I would have won comfortably, but this was our race."

In other features:

n Gregg Satterlee started 10th, passed points leader Dave Hess Jr. on the 21st lap and won the special 30-lap Late Model feature. He picked up $3,000 for his efforts.

"The car felt fast and I was gaining ground on (Hess) halfway through the race," Satterlee said. "I knew I had plenty of time to get him."

Hess Jr. had a bg lead for much of the first 20 laps and was almost lulled to sleep.

"I backed off the gas a little bit and, suddenly, there was Gregg," Hess said. "I thought Matt Lux was in second, but Gregg was coming hard.

"Once he got the top groove on me, it was gonna be tough because he runs great up there."

Satterlee nearly sailed off the top cushion of the back straightaway on the 29th lap.

"I glanced over my shoulder to see where Hess was and almost lost it," he said. "That shows how much you have to concentrate when you're behind the wheel out there."

• New Brighton's Kevin Bolland, 50, won his 50th career Lernerville Modified feature. He started fifth, took the lead from Jeremiah Shingledecker on the third lap, and held it from there.

Bolland had to hold off runner-up Brian Swartzlander on two restarts late in the race to grab the checkered.

"I've had a lot of second places here this year," said Bolland, the Modified points leader. "The competition is tough. We just have to keep on digging."

• Joe Kelley of Mount Pleasant clinched the Sportsman Stocks points crown by winning his eighth feature of the campaign at the Sarver oval.

Kelley had the pole, lost the lead on laps 14 and 15 to 17-year-old A.J. Flick, then got it back.

Flick, winner of two features in the past three weeks, started from the 11th position. He spun out on Turn 4 of the final lap in a last-ditch effort to overtake Kelley.

"That kid didn't come here to finish second, so give him credit," Kelley said. "He's very good."

Notes: There were 75 cars in the pits. ... John Flinner of Zelienople started the Late Model feature 19th and finished seventh. ... Satterlee has won two consecutive Late Model features at Lernerville.
