DYSART — A driver is being treated for injuries suffered after he became partially covered in molten asphalt following a collision with a dump truck.

Authorities said the unidentified man is in a Pittsburgh hospital after he was buried up to his waist in 300-degree blacktop in a three-vehicle crash in Dean Township, Cambria County, Tuesday.

Police said the dump truck tipped over, crushing the pickup's cab and pinning the injured motorist inside. The asphalt then began pouring into the truck.

PITTSBURGH — Authorities said a fire damaged five cars at a downtown Pittsburgh parking garage after flames erupted from one vehicle's engine and spread.Fire Chief Darryl Jones said the blaze broke out about 12:30 p.m. Thursday on the third floor of the garage at the Greyhound bus station. It was under control about an hour later. Jones said the city's arson squad is investigating.

PITTSBURGH — Pittsburgh attorney David J. Hickton was sworn in as the U.S. Attorney for Western Pennsylvania.Senior U.S. District Judge Gustave Diamond administered the oath of office to the 54-year-old attorney in a private ceremony Thursday morning.President Barack Obama nominated Hickton in May and the Senate confirmed him Aug. 5.Hickton is active in Democratic politics and helped found the Pittsburgh firm of Burns, White & Hickton in 1987. He oversees 51 assistant attorneys and 60 support staff in offices based in Pittsburgh, Erie and Johnstown.

LANCASTER — The U.S. Mint is coming to Lancaster to unveil a new dollar-coin commemorating former President James Buchanan.It will be the 15th coin in the presidential $1 coin program.Mint officials will do the ceremonial coin launch later this month at Wheatland, the former president's home.

PHILADELPHIA — A mom who staged a hoax kidnapping while under criminal investigation was denied bail in the $700,000 fraud case.Bonnie Sweeten of Feasterville has spent a year incarcerated since calling 911 and reporting two black men kidnapped her and a 9-year-old daughter. They were later found at Disney World.U.S. District Judge William Yohn Jr. said Thursday the 40-year-old paralegal must remain in custody until her November fraud trial. She is accused of stealing money from an elderly relative and a law firm. Sweeten served nearly a year in prison for the false 911 call.
