Mars' pitching wins Eagle County
CRANBERRY TWP — Cranberry Township needed a big inning.
Tim Mosley made sure it didn't come.
The right-hander pitched a six-hit shutout as Mars claimed the 2010 Eagle County League baseball championship with a 5-0 win over Cranberry at North Boundary Park Wednesday night.
Mars won the best-of-5 series, three games to one.
It is the club's second title in three years.
Mosley fanned five and did not walk a batter.
"There's nobody I'd rather have in a game where we can clinch it," Mars player/manager Rob Fester said of Mosley. "He pitched in and won the final game two years ago and I have all the confidence in the world in him."
Mosley last pitched for Mars in the team's 7-1 semifinal clinching win over Mars II Aug. 2, but threw in a 30-plus league this past weekend.
"It was mainly my fastball and slider working for me today," he said.
Leading 5-0 in the bottom of the sixth inning, Mosley doused Cranberry's last threat to get back in the game.
After one out, Johnny Hastings and Greg Miller managed back-to-back singles.
But Mosley caught Hugh Mulvey looking at strike three and Bill Clinefelter popped out to catcher Brad Ziegler to end the frame.
Cranberry stranded seven runners in the game.
"We faced (Mosley) earlier this year and he beat us, but we beat him last year, so we had confidence," said Clinefelter, Cranberry's player/manager. "There's not a pitcher in this league who we feel we don't have a chance against.
"It all comes down to breaks," he added. "We hit a lot of balls hard, but at people."
Mars' bats gave Mosley an early lead against Cranberry starter Steve Cunningham.
Phil Shallenberger singled to lead off the game and moved to second on Aaron Ordy's walk.
The former scored on Brendan Malone's base hit and Ordy later came home on Fester's sacrifice fly for a 2-0 advantage.
Mosley allowed Jim Burry and Hastings on base on back-to-back hits in the bottom of the first before retiring the next three batters.
"It's always great to take the mound with a lead," Mosley said of the early edge. "It makes it easier to throw strikes and get ahead of hitters."
Mars (32-5) added two more runs in the fifth on RBI-singles from Ordy and Mike Bruno.
Ordy added a run-scoring flyout in the sixth to cap the scoring.
Cunningham shouldered the defeat after throwing 5-plus innings, striking out four and walking four.
Bill Stehle recorded the final six outs on the mound for Cranberry.
"This team has everything," said Fester. "We entered tonight's game with a team ERA of just 1.50, but we've got the hitting and fielding, too."
For Cranberry (25-15-1), it was a disappointing end to an otherwise strong season.
"This was our first appearance in the finals and we set a club record for wins in a season," said Clinefelter. "We're already thinking about next year."
