BlueSox put up for sale

Majority owner Trich says team will stay in Butler

Butler BlueSox majority owner Leo Trich has put his share of the team up for sale.

That doesn't mean the Prospect League baseball club will leave Butler, however.

Trich said the odds of Butler losing the BlueSox are "very slim."

In fact, Trich is determined to find a "local face" for the franchise to keep the team playing at Pullman Park.

"We have put together two very successful seasons, but I feel much more can be accomplished — especially with the foundation we have laid for the future," Trich said. "The folks in Butler have been great to me, but I believe having true local ownership can only increase the chances for greater success."

Trich, who lives in Wasington, Pa., made the 135-mile round-trip commute that past two summers to run the club.

The travel was one of the reasons why Trich decided to sell some or all of his 60 percent share of the team.

"It was something I certainly did not like to do," Trich said. "Having a person on location here in Butler just makes too much sense to ignore."

The Butler Recreation and Stadium Authority owns the other 40 percent of the club and will have the first crack at purchasing the remaining shares of the team, Trich said.

The stadium authority has 30 days to buy the shares or find other investors, Trich said.

"The 30 days is not absolute," Trich said. "If they can't buy it, they can get other investors from Butler or Butler County.

"It might be a combination (of ownership)," Trich said. "I would stay on at maybe 10 percent."

Trich could not say how much the team or his share of it is worth.

"That will be decided by the market," Trich said.

Trich did say he would be hesitant to sell if a party from outside Butler was interested.

"If someone from Kentucky wants to buy the team, I'm better off keeping it myself," Trich said. "It kind of goes against what I'm trying to do. I'm not anxious to sell it to someone outside the area."

The BlueSox just concluded their second season in the Prospect League. The club has a three-year agreement with the league, which runs through next season.

The BlueSox drew 14,090 fans to Pullman Park this season, an average of 563 per game. That put Butler's attendance in the middle of the pack in the Prospect League.

The attendance, though, was down from last season when the club drew 16,687 fans — an average of 641 per home date.

"People in Butler have a tremendous love for baseball," Trich said. "Maybe even more than Washington. Butler people have rallied around the BlueSox and Pullman Park."

Trich said he hopes to have the new ownership in place within 60 days.

"The problem is you literally have to start preparing for next season in October," Trich said. "The schedule for next year comes out around Thanksgiving. I'd like to have the ownership in place so I can help with the transition."
