FRANKLIN TWP, Beaver County — Baseball-themed shows are making their way around area theaters this summer.
First the Musical Theatre Guild of Butler, in conjunction with the Succop Theater, presented the musical "Damn Yankees" in July.
Now the Red Barn Players will stage "Honus and Me" from Aug. 13 to 28 at the Red Barn Theatre on Route 228, the Ellwood-Zelienople Road.
In the story, Joey Stoshack is the strikeout king of his Little League baseball team. But his problems get bigger and dangerous when he finds the Honus Wagner T-206 baseball card, the most valuable card in the world. The card could help his mother and maybe get his parents back together, but does the card really belong to him?
As he struggles to decide the right thing to do, the card's special power brings Honus Wagner, the turn-of-the-last-century star of the Pittsburgh Pirates, into Joey's life.
Together they travel back in time and get a chance to play in the 1909 World Series against Ty Cobb and the Detroit Tigers. A surprise ending sets everything right.
The cast includes Conner Gillooly of Cranberry Township, Tom Bickert of Ellwood City, Paul Brenner of Brighton Township, Robert S. Hazen of New Castle, Drew Martin of Franklin Park, Hazel Zimmerman of New Brighton, MaryBeth Seipp of Mars and Tom Licker of Economy.
The show, written by Dan Gutman, is being directed by Annette Quinn of Mars.
Performances are set for 8 p.m. Aug. 13, 14, 19, 20, 21, 25, 26, 27 and 28.
