GIBSONIA — Jed Christiansen, 23, of Greenville won the 19th annual St. Barnabas Medical Center 5K Run/Walk Saturday. He polished off a course-record of 14 minutes, 51 seconds.

There was a record 980 runners/walkers participating. Brent Collins, 48, of Evans City won the men's master (ages 40-49) division. Tim Monfre of Butlerwon the men's grand master (ages 50-over) division while Cheryl Relic of Mars won the women's.

Other local division winners were Grant Baron of Butler (men's age 15-19), Bill Schmidt of Mars (men's 55-59), Dezso Csizmadia of Butler (men's 70-74), Holly Bauer of Saxonburg (women's 30-34), Melissa Schaeffer of Sarver (women's 35-39), Barbara Lane of Cranberry Township (women's 60-64) and Valerie Sands of Butler (women's 65-69).

SEATTLE — The last-place Seattle Mariners fired Don Wakamatsu, the major leagues' first Japanese-American manager, hours before Monday night's game against Oakland.Wakamatsu became the fifth manager in the majors to be fired this season. Baltimore's Dave Trembley, Kansas City's Trey Hillman, Arizona's A.J. Hinch and Florida's Fredi Gonzalez also were dismissed.Seattle entered the day 42-70, the second-worst record in the American League.

DETROIT — Mike Ilitch, the owner of baseball's Detroit Tigers and hockey's Detroit Red Wings wants to buy the NBA's Detroit Pistons.Ilitch said he is interested in purchasing the basketball team in part because he fears the area could lose it if an out-of-town buyer comes forward. Ilitch says he notified the Pistons Monday.

ASHBURN, Va. — Albert Haynesworth returned to work as $100 million backup, working at second-string nose tackle in his first full practice at this year's Washington Redskins training camp.Haynesworth put on his No. 92 jersey and blended with his teammates, usually lining up between defensive ends Phillip Daniels and Darrion Scott in the team's new 3-4 defense.

Ilya Kovalchuk is back on the free-agent market.An arbiter ruled that the NHL acted correctly in voiding Kovalchuk's landmark $102 million contract with the New Jersey Devils.The league had rejected the 17-year contract, saying the longest deal in league history violated its salary cap.
