PITTSBURGH — Former Pittsburgh Pirates pitcher and broadcaster Nellie King has died at age 82.

Duquesne University athletic spokesman Dave Saba announced King's death today, after battling colon cancer and pneumonia.

King worked as the Pittsburgh school's sports information director from 1975 to 1992 and its golf coach for 16 years before retiring in 2004.

He also was color commentator for the radio broadcasts of Duquesne men's basketball.

Before working for Duquesne, King pitched for the Pirates from 1954 to 1957 and then worked on the Pirates' three-man broadcast team from 1967 to 1975.
