Aubrey's course hit by burglars
BUTLER TWP — A smashed cash register. Another missing. Bottles of alcohol and candy bars also unaccounted for.
But that wasn't the worst of the discoveries made by workers at Aubrey's Dubbs -Dred Golf Course early Friday morning.
Also missing after an apparent burglary were pictures of George Aubrey Jr., John Aubrey Sr. and other family members with their mother, Eva Aubrey, who died earlier this month.
Money, alcohol and candy bars can be replaced. Those photos cannot, said George Aubrey Jr.
"One of the cash registers that were stolen had very sentimental pictures of children and grandchildren with recently deceased Eva Aubrey," George Aubrey said. "We want to get those photographs back."
Butler Township Police Chief Gary Garman said Sunday night his department is investigating.
John Aubrey Sr., owner of the course, could not be reached for comment Sunday night.
These burglars knew what they were doing, George Aubrey said.
The course closes at 11:30 p.m. Approximately 15 minutes later, the surveillance cameras were switched off. There was no forced entry.
Workers discovered the burglary at approximately 3:30 a.m. Friday, George Aubrey said.
A golf cart was also found abandoned on the 12th green and uneaten candy bars were discovered in a waste basket.
"This certainly wasn't a random job," George Aubrey said. "They knew exactly what to do."
George Aubrey said he is uncertain if anything else was taken. Course employees are currently taking an inventory of golf equipment.
George Aubrey spent Saturday and Sunday searching the woods surrounding the course for the missing cash register and any other discarded items.
"It had to be more than one person," he said. "Just carrying the cash register would be tough enough for one person."
He and his family are offering a $1,000 reward for any information that leads to the apprehension and conviction of the burglars.
"It can be anonymous," George Aubrey said. "I figure someone would squeal."
Anyone with any information is urged to call the Butler Township Police, he said.
Getting the pictures of Eva Aubrey returned is the No. 1 priority for the Aubreys.
Eva Aubrey, 88, died July 2. She was instrumental in the expansion and management of the course, which has been in the Aubrey family for more than 45 years.
"You feel violated," George Aubrey said. "John was absolutely devastated. This month has not been the greatest for us."
