ERIE — Butler graduate Becky Smith was selected as a PSAC Scholar Athlete after her freshman season as a member of the Mercyhurst College volleyball team.

Student athletes must have a cumulative grade point average of at least 3.50.

Smith led Mercyhurst in block percentage and was third in the PSAC as well, and was awarded the Jim McKeever Scholarship.

ADAMS TWP — The Mars Athletic Hall of Fame's Class of 2010 will be honored before the football game against Pine-Richland Sept. 10 at the Mars Athletic Complex.This year's inductees include: Jean (Santom) Schmiedel (Class of 1979), Leda Best (1977), Bobby Matter (1995), Brandon Mueller (2000), Michele (Ross) Goodworth (1992).A ceremonial dinner will be held at 5 p.m. Sept. 10 at Mars Middle School. LAS VEGAS — Amare Stoudemire will not play for the United States in next month's world championships because of problems insuring his contract, a damaging blow to the Americans on the day training camp opened.The New York Knicks new forward was expected to be one of the Americans' top players in Istanbul, Turkey, before the team learned of the change of plans Tuesday.The Knicks asked Stoudemire to pull out Monday night. He could still play in the 2012 Olympics if the insurance issues are worked out.

OKLAHOMA CITY — Olympic gold medalist Jennie Finch plans to retire next month and bring an end to a 10-year softball career in which she helped the sport blossom in the United States.The 6-foot-2 Finch won gold at the 2004 Olympics in Athens and silver four years later in Beijing. Earlier this month, she helped the U.S. win its seventh straight world title.
