SAN DIEGO — The San Diego Padres on Monday extended manager Bud Black's contract for three years through the 2013 season, with club options for the 2014 and 2015 seasons.
Black has had the surprising Padres in first place in the NL West since April 20. They have an NL-best 54-37 record and a four-game lead over the Colorado Rockies.
Black was hired after Bruce Bochy left following the 2006 season. He has a record of 281-297, including 89-74 in 2007, his first season.
PITTSBURGH — Pitt defensive end Jabaal Sheard was suspended indefinitely after being accused of throwing another man through the glass door of an art gallery.Police say Sheard was in a fight early Sunday and had to be pepper sprayed after he threw the man through the door of La Fond Galleries.Pitt spokesman E.J. Borghetti says Sheard has been suspended from team activities while the athletic department investigates.Sheard was arraigned Sunday on charges including aggravated assault and resisting arrest. Police say charges are possible against the other man. Borghetti declined to comment on Sheard's behalf.The 21-year-old Sheard is from Hollywood Hills, Fla. He tallied five sacks while starting all 13 games for the Panthers last season.
STATE COLLEGE — The "Whitehouse" game is on hold this season at Penn State.Tickets for the Nittany Lions' game Sept. 25 against Temple said that was the day fans would be encouraged to wear all white to Beaver Stadium.But the athletic department said Monday that was a misprint, and the next planned Whitehouse game is for 2011 against Alabama. A team spokesman says the same tickets will still be good, though, for admission to the Temple-Penn State game.
LONDON — Tottenham has become the first English Premier League team to ban vuvuzelas from its stadium.The north London club said Monday the South African trumpets could pose "unnecessary risks to public safety and could impact on the ability of all supporters to hear any emergency safety announcements" at White Hart Lane.Their blaring noise featured widely at the recently concluded World Cup and frequently drowned out stadium announcements at matches and television commentary.
NEWARK, N.J. — Ilya Kovalchuk is staying with the New Jersey Devils, agreeing to a staggering 17-year, $102 million deal with the team.Kovalchuk's agent and the team announced Monday that the high-scoring left wing has agreed to stay with New Jersey, ending weeks of speculation where the league's leading goal scorer since 2001 would be skating next season.The deal is somewhat salary-cap friendly for the Devils, who will absorb an annual hit of $6 million — the average amount per season. However, Kovalchuk will remain on the books through the 2026-27 season.
NASHVILLE, Tenn. — Chris Johnson's agent said the running back and the Tennessee Titans have agreed on a revised deal that will ensure he reports to camp with the rest of the team.Agent Joel Segal would not say how much of a raise Johnson is getting, but did say the player will get a pay increase. Johnson will reportedly earn $2.5 million this season under the revised deal.
