PITTSBURGH — Tuition is going up more than 5 percent at the University of Pittsburgh.

School trustees Friday approved a 5.5 percent hike for in-state undergraduates, an increase of about $734 per year.

That means in-state students on the main campus will pay about $14,078 annually, though some majors cost more. The price does not include room, board and fees.

Out-of-state students will see their tuition bills rise 3 percent, to about $23,733 a year. That's about $692 more than last year.

ALLENTOWN — A soldier died in Afghanistan in an attack that seriously injured his best friend from high school.The Defense Department announced Friday Spc. Jesse Reed, 26, of Orefield was killed by an improvised explosive device.Military authorities said Reed was one of four soldiers who died Wednesday in Zabul province after insurgents attacked their military vehicle.Reed's best friend, Adam Keys, 25, was injured by the roadside bomb, according to Keys' wife Rosie, who lives in North Whitehall Township.Reed leaves behind a pregnant wife and son.

OLEY — A township repealed an ordinance banning anyone but law enforcement officers from carrying guns into the municipal building.The Oley Township supervisors voted to repeal the law Thursday night.Opponents pointed out state law prohibits counties and municipalities from regulating ownership and possession of firearms.Supervisor Jeffrey Spatz said the board erred in passing the ordinance in June.

WILKES-BARRE — Police want to know who broke into a mausoleum, smashed open a crypt and stole a human skull from a decades-old casket.Workers at Hollenback Cemetery in Wilkes-Barre discovered the vandalism and theft Friday morning.Cemetery employees say someone cut the lock to the mausoleum, which was built in 1904. The skull was taken from a casket interred in the 1920s.
