Pittsburgh police charged a registered sex offender with the fatal stabbing of a teenage girl whose body was dumped near a city high school.

Tushon Brown, 35, was arrested on a parole violation Wednesday at a beauty salon where his mother worked in Goldsboro, N.C.

After Pittsburgh police traveled to North Carolina to interview him, Brown was charged Thursday with homicide.

Lauren Deis, 14, had been missing for several days from her East Liberty home when her body was found wrapped in trash bags on Tuesday near Langley High School.

Brown pleaded guilty to rape in 2002 and was on Pennsylvania's sex-offender registry. He was recently released from prison and had been living in Sheraden.

Activist group seeks to save Igloo

An activist group wants to save the longtime home of the Pittsburgh Penguins from a proposed demolition.

The hockey team is vacating decades-old Mellon Arena for the new Consol Energy Center.

Mellon Arena, nicknamed the Igloo, is owned by the Allegheny County Sports & Exhibition Authority.

Members of Reuse the Igloo asked the authority Thursday to give the group a year to develop a plan to save the facility. They say the arena is part of history.

Authority Executive Director Mary Conturo said the agency is reviewing options.
