Bishop

William M. Bishop, 77, an Akron, Ohio, area resident for more than 50 years, died Monday of pancreatic cancer.

Born in Kaylor, Armstrong County, to the late Joseph and Hattie Bishop, Bill was a 1955 graduate of Allegheny College, where he was a stellar athlete competing in basketball and baseball. He was inducted into the Allegheny College Athletic Hall of Fame in the charter Class of 1981 and the Butler County Sports Hall of Fame in 1992.

Following his active duty in the U.S. Air Force, Bill continued his career with the B.F. Goodrich Aerospace Division. He retired in 1995 after 40 years being instrumental in the opening of the Aircraft Evacuation Systems facility in Phoenix, Ariz.

The Bishop family went on many camping trips throughout the United States, and in retirement, Bill and Mona traveled frequently to Europe.

He also proudly supported the Akron Art Museum.

As a member of Northminster Presbyterian Church, Bill served as a deacon and elder. His life motto was "My faith, my family and my friends."

He is survived by his wife of 54 years, Mona, his college sweetheart; a daughter, Laura L. Bishop; sons, William P. (Sandi) and Robert J. (Caroline); and his beloved grandsons, Colin and Clayton.

The family thanks Crossroads Hospice for its compassionate care of Bill in his final days.
