HARRISBURG — Gov. Ed Rendell says he's hoping a proposed major expansion of railroad yards in Pennsylvania will ease growing truck traffic on the highways.

The Democrat said Thursday that Pennsylvania and four other states will apply later this month to the federal government for $115 million to expand Norfolk Southern's rail freight corridor between the Northeast and the Gulf Coast.

That money includes $25 million for the rail yard in Harrisburg and $8 million for a terminal at the Philadelphia Navy Yard.

Rendell says expanding the rails could mean thousands of new jobs, while taking trucks off the road.

WASHINGTON, Pa. — Police say a man shot and killed by officers first led police on a 15-minute car chase through three southwestern Pennsylvania municipalities.Authorities identified the suspect as 42-year-old Kelly Duane Smith. Police shot and killed him Wednesday after investigators say he fled from officers near Washington and crashed his sedan.Authorities say a female passenger jumped from Smith's vehicle during the pursuit and received minor injuries. They say she is cooperating with police. The incident remains under investigation.

SHANKSVILLE — The National Park Service unveiled a new temporary memorial indoors Thursday at the site where Flight 93 crashed during the 2001 terror attacks.A previous temporary memorial was outside and included a fence with mementos attached. It had to be relocated as construction continues on the permanent memorial.Park Service Site Manager Jeff Reinbold says a portion of the fence and some mementos will be showcased in the new temporary facility.Flight 93 was traveling from Newark, N.J., to San Francisco when hijackers took it over on Sept. 11, 2001.The permanent memorial is expected to be finished in time for the 10th anniversary of the day.

PHILADELPHIA — The Coast Guard will suspend its search for two tourists still missing when the duck boat they were riding in was struck by a barge on the Delaware River, said civilian search and rescue official David Umberger on Thursday evening.Thirty-seven people were thrown overboard Wednesday afternoon when the barge slammed into a stalled duck boat. The boat sank, and two Hungarian students, ages 16 and 20, have not been found.The others on board were not hurt seriously.
