PITTSBURGH — A Pennsylvania woman has been charged in the suffocation death of her 1-month-old granddaughter.

Pittsburgh police say Elane Springs, 49, accidentally sat on the baby as she was sleeping on the couch on Sept. 18, 2008. Police say Springs didn't immediately notice she was sitting on the baby, then got up and didn't call 911.

Instead, police say the woman changed the baby's clothes and then called her son about an hour later. Police say she left a message asking her son to tell his sister, who was the baby's mother, that the baby had died.

Springs was being held at the Allegheny County Jail on a charge of involuntary manslaughter. It was not clear if she had an attorney.
