SEWICKLEY HEIGHTS — St. Jude Golf Club member and Pittsburgh resident Nathan Smith carded a 4-under-par 68 Wednesdday to win the 110th WPGA Amateur Championship at Sewickley Heights Golf Club.
Smith shot a 7-under-par 209 for the 54-hole event. Fellow St. Jude member Sean Knapp finished three strokes behind with a 212.
Smith, Knapp and David Brown of Pittsburgh began the final round tied for second, one stroke behind John Popeck of Washington, Pa.
Popeck carded a 73 Wednesday to finish third, four strokes behind. Brown shot a 75 to finish seven strokes off the pace.
WASHINGTON — Butler graduate and Washington & Jefferson College sophomore swimmer Brittany Vogel has been selected honorable mention Division III Scholar All-America for the second consecutive year.The team is named by the College Swimming Coaches Association of America.Vogel posted a NCAA "B" Cut qualifying time of two minutes, 10.74 seconds in the 200 IM at the Presidents' Athletic Conference Championships. She won the PAC title in the 200 backstroke with a time of 2:09.28.Vogel owns a 3.78 grade point average as a chemistry major.
