Big Butler (un)fair fireworks night

gklukehart@hotmail.com

Last evening, I had the pleasure of attending the Big Butler Fair and the fireworks that followed. What a beautiful night it was, until it was time to leave. When we arrived, we were parked in the west gate, two rows back from the admission booths. Great we thought, until it was time to leave after the fireworks. We had to sit for two hours in line to get out of that mess. All of the wonderful civil air patrols were nowhere to be found. We moved 4 cars lenghts in that 2 hours. I finally walked up to the gate and found that They were allowing all of the traffic closest to the exit to leave, and not alternating so that we poor souls who were trapped down near the entrance gate to even move. I attempted to call the fair office, and was hung up on 4 times. The "gentleman" who answered the phone told me there was nothing he could do, that the state police were in charge of the road while the fair was going on. I then called the state police to tell them we were trapped in, and he told me that there were 5 police cars at the entrance and that there was nothing they could do. I finally threw the SUV into 4 wheel drive and found a way to the upper end and was out within a matter of a minute or two. Sure, there were police cars, just sitting there with their lights on, noone directing any traffic. What a poor way of running things. Why did the fair not have anyone in the parking lot helping us out. By the time we got out, all of the other lots had been completely emptied long before us, There were families with babies, small children, trapped in that lot. This should have never happened!
