MOUNT LEBANON — A woman struck by a vehicle Monday as she pushed her children in a stroller died Tuesday.

Authorities said Lisa Styles, 36, died Tuesday, a day after she was allegedly struck by a drunken driver in Mount Lebanon.

Styles was pushing her 1-year-old daughter and 3-year-old son in a stroller when police say she was struck by a sport utility vehicle being driven by Benjamin Cope, 20. The stroller was overturned, but the children remained strapped in and apparently unhurt.

Cope already is facing charges of driving under the influence, and police said he could face more charges. Investigators say Cope ran a stop sign just before hitting Styles.

HARRISBURG — Former House Democratic whip Mike Veon not only gave up his freedom when he was sent to prison this month, but he was stripped of his state pension.Veon was sentenced to 6 to 14 years behind bars June 18 for his role in a scheme to use taxpayers' money and resources to help elect Democrats.Because Veon was convicted of job-related charges that included theft of services and theft by deception, the state Public Employee Pension Forfeiture Act bars him from collecting a pension, which has a calculated value of about $50,000 a year.Convicted co-defendant Annamarie Perretta-Rosepink also lost her pension. She is the former director of Veon's Beaver Falls office.

SPRINGFIELD — Police say a Delaware man charged with a fatal stabbing in Pennsylvania secretly used a global positioning system device to track the victim's movements.According to court documents, police believe Sean Burton attached a GPS tracking device to James Stropas' sport utility vehicle sometime before stabbing him last week.Burton of Newark, Del., was arrested June 21 in Springfield after being pulled over behind the wheel of Stropas' SUV. Stropas' dead body was on the passenger side floor. Burton told police Stropas came at him with a knife and he defended himself.Burton is being held without bail on charges, including first-degree murder.Police say Stropas had been dating Burton's estranged wife.

MONACA — Unions representing teachers and support staff reached tentative contract agreements with a merged school district after threatening to strike in the fall.Officials with the Central Valley School District in Beaver County and its unions announced the deals in a joint news release. Contract details won't be released until both sides ratify the deals sometime next month.The Monaca School District began merging last July with the Center Area School District to form Central Valley, Pennsylvania's first merged district in at least 20 years. The districts combined elementary schools for this past school year, but middle and high schools will merge this fall.On June 9, union officials threatened to strike in September if the deals weren't reached.

HARRISBURG — Legislation that would require Pennsylvania state college professors to consider buying the cheapest educationally sound textbooks for their courses is drawing scrutiny from faculty groups.The American Association of University Professors and Association of Pennsylvania State College & University Faculties issued statements Monday expressing concern about academic freedom.Sen. Andrew Dinniman's textbook legislation passed the Senate on June 23. He says student costs would be factored into selecting course materials but that faculty rights would not be abridged. Dinniman is a former full-time professor at West Chester University.The legislation also requires publishers doing business with Pennsylvania colleges to offer digital versions of textbooks by 2020.
