Butler slays Dragons

Butler BlueSox manager Jason Wuerfel has a gut feeling about this year's team — and the squad confirmed his instincts Tuesday night against Dupage (Ill.)

After jumping out to a 5-0 lead, the BlueSox withstood a Dragons rally to post a 7-4 victory in Prospect League baseball at Pullman Park.

"We did a really good job. We showed our intestinal fortitude by hanging in there," said Wuerfel. "Despite a couple of bad bounces, we did a good job coming right back."

A four-run Dupage rally in the fourth inning made it a 5-4 game, but Butler answered with two runs in the fifth inning on an RBI single by Tyler Sciacca and an RBI triple by Logan Uxa in consecutive at-bats.

The BlueSox bullpen allowed only one hit over the final five innings.

"Sometimes when you get up early, you can get lackadaisical," said Wuerfel. "(Dupage) didn't give up. They were down 5-0 and stayed in the game."

The BlueSox (10-12) jumped out to a 4-0 first-inning lead after Dom Duggan opened the inning with a bunt single, stole second, then scored on a Colby Roberts single.

Kevan Smith walked, then, one out later, Sciacca walked. But a wild pitch on the last pitch allowed Roberts to scamper home.

Uxa walked to load the bases before Jonathan Craycraft lined a two-run single for the four-run lead.

"Ben (Rawding) had struck out the side in the top of the first inning and that pumped us up," said Sciacca. "Zach got that bunt hit and that just got us going."

Butler made it 5-0 when Craycraft added a sacrifice fly that plated John Sulzicki in the third.

At that point, Rawding had allowed the Dragons (6-12) just two hits through the first three innings.

Dupage, however, finally answered in the fourth when Rawding opened the inning with a walk to the Dragons' Steve Dalporto, then allowed a single to Jomel Torres.

Jake Miller followed with an RBI single, then Jared Deacon followed with an chopper that BlueSox catcher Smith threw to first base.

His high throw hit first baseman Sulzicki's glove and rolled away, which allowed one run to score. The ball was retrieved and tossed toward second, but that throw rolled away and a second run scored on the play.

A walk to Derek Brown put runners on the corners with no outs, but Martin grounded into a double play, which sent home the fourth run.

Rawding got Kyle Shaver to ground out and end the frame.

"Jason always tells us 'Don't change your approach whether you're up by 10 or down by 10. Be aggressive on the base paths,'" said Sciacca.
