Plenty of activities at Moraine
MUDDY CREEK TWP — Moraine State Park has scheduled a number of activities for July. Several of these occur on the July 4th holiday weekend.
Here is what is planned:
• Saturday: The park will provide kayak lessons at 2 p.m. before a two-hour kayaking trip on Lake Arthur, followed by a catered dinner.There is a $12 registration fee. Those kayaking must be at least 12 years old with adult supervision.To reserve a kayak or to register, call 724-368-8811.
• Sunday: The park naturalist will lead participants in a scavenger hunt at 2 p.m. The hunt is for families to experience different parts of the park. Participants can meet in front of the concession stand at Lakeview Beach on the North Shore.
• July 10: The park will have a turn of the century oil well and pumping engine operating from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. It is past the forest and regional office building on Park Road off Route 528.
• July 10: The park naturalist will lead a 4.5 mile hike along Wyggeston Trail at 10 a.m. It will take roughly four hours and will include tours of different areas. Participants should take a lunch, water and shoes for hiking.
• July 11: The park will have a program discussing human similarities to other animals at 1:30 p.m. at the McDanel's Launch area, Pavilion 7. The program will include a short hike.
• July 16, 23, and 30: The park will offer outdoor experiences for young adults ages 13 to 17 from 1 to 4 p.m. at the park's Lakeview Beach on the North Shore. It will include kayaking, geocaching, disc golf and fishing.A fee of $15 covers all three days. • July 24: Those interested in navigation can join the park naturalist for a geocaching exploration at 11 a.m. at the Pleasant Valley picnic area on the South Shore. The park has GPS units that participants can use.
• July 25: The park and the Western Pennsylvania Paddle Sport Association will offer a kayak lessons at 1 p.m. at the Pleasant Valley Launch on the South Shore.The program lasts three hours and costs $10 per person. Participants must be at least 12 years old and accompanied by an adult if younger than 18.For information or to register, call the park office at 724-368-8811.
• July 31: Families can learn to fish at the Bear Run Boat Launch on the South Shore at 1 p.m. The park staff and the Pennsylvania Fish and Boat Commission will provide basic fishing lessons.Participants must register for the program and are not required to have a fishing license.To preregister, call the park office at 724-368-8811.
