Lots of fun on every weekend
SLIPPERY ROCK TWP, Lawrence County — McConnells Mill State Park plans to have different programs each weekend in July.
Here is what is scheduled:
• Saturday: An outdoor cooking demonstration will be held at 2 p.m. Participants can meet the park naturalist in the courtyard next to the old mill. The demonstration will consist of food and tips for eating in the outdoors.
• Sunday and Aug. 1: The park naturalist will lead an art in nature program at 2 p.m. at the Kildoo Picnic Area. Participants can learn how to incorporate collecting and pressing flowers into artwork.
• July 10: The park will offer a taste of nature with a program about edible plants at 2 p.m. at the Kildoo Picnic area. The program will teach participants basic plant identification and also provide some wild food recipes.
• July 11: The park will offer an informative and leisurely hike through the half-mile path at Hell's Hollow at 1 p.m. Participants will learn about the history of the valley.Participants can meet at the Hell's Hollow parking lot and should allow for a 15 minute drive if coming from the old mill.
• July 17: A 2-mile hike at 10 a.m. will cover Slippery Rock Creek. The hike is fairly demanding and will last two and a half hours. Participants can meet at the park's Kildoo Picnic Area.
• July 24: The park staff will guide a challenging hike at 9 a.m. at the Eckert Bridge parking lot. The 6.2-mile hike will last at least four and a half hours and participants should take food and drink.
• July 31: The park staff will hold a basic outdoor survival skills program at 2 p.m. at the Kildoo Picnic area.
