Burka

Hope V. Burka, 82, of Lyndora died Tuesday night at the VNA Inpatient Hospice in Butler.

She was born in Butler, Feb. 2, 1928, a daughter of the late Metro and Dorothy Vawryk.

Hope was a graduate of Butler High School and then earned state teacher certification. She taught grades first through sixth at the one-room Brownsdale School. She later retired as the Butler Township treasurer after being in that office for eight years. Before that, she had worked 10 years in the Butler Township Tax Office.

She was an active member of SS. Peter and Paul Ukrainian Orthodox Church in Lyndora, where she was a cantor with the church choir for many years. She was one of the volunteer perogie workers and a member of their ladies guild. She also was a member of the Senior U.O.L., the Ukrainian Orthodox League.

Surviving are her husband, Nicholas Burka Jr., who she married Sept. 26, 1948; two sons, Robert H. Burka of Lyndora and James E. Burka of Butler; a daughter, Patricia Prokopchak and her husband David of Meridian; three grandsons, Gregory Prokopchak and his wife, Vickie, and Robert and Eric Prokopchak; and a great-grandson, Seth Prokopchak.

<B>BURKA </B>— Friends of Hope V. Burka, who died Tuesday, May 25, 2010, will be received from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. Friday at the <B>Geibel Funeral Home</B>, 201 E. Cunningham St., Butler. Funeral services will be held at 10 a.m. Saturday at SS. Peter and Paul Ukrainian Orthodox Church, 21 Evergreen Road, Lyndora. The pastor, the Rev. Paisius McGrath, will officiate.
