Niedermayer

ANAHEIM, Calif. — Less than four months after leading Canada to Olympic gold, Scott Niedermayer felt he could leave hockey on top.

After all, that's where the Anaheim Ducks' smooth-skating defenseman spent an incredible amount of his hockey career.

Niedermayer ended his 18-year NHL career Tuesday, retiring after winning four Stanley Cup titles and a wealth of medals and trophies earned everywhere from junior hockey to the Vancouver Games.

And after several flirtations with retirement in recent years, Niedermayer says he's "100 percent committed" to his decision.

Niedermayer will stay with the organization as a consultant to general manager Bob Murray.

EL SEGUNDO, Calif. — Los Angeles Lakers center Andrew Bynum's injured right knee was drained for the third time in recent weeks, and the two-time NBA champion will have surgery next month.Bynum said Tuesday he's headed to the World Cup in South Africa before undergoing surgery around July 18 to repair a partially torn meniscus in his knee. Recovery time is short for the surgery, and Bynum should be at full strength for training camp this fall.The Lakers gathered at their training complex for exit interviews one day after the victory parade celebrating their seven-game win over the Boston Celtics in the NBA finals last week.Forward Lamar Odom also said he might have surgery on his sore left shoulder.

MILWAUKEE — The Milwaukee Bucks acquired forward Corey Maggette in a trade with the Golden State Warriors Tuesday, sending them guard Charlie Bell and center Dan Gadzuric in return.The Bucks also get a second-round pick from the Warriors in Thursday night's NBA draft, leaving them with three selections in the second round.Maggette played in 70 games with 49 starts for Golden State last season, averaging 19.8 points per game. He will be expected to provide scoring for a team that may lose free agent John Salmons.Bell played in 71 games for Milwaukee last season, averaging 6.5 points, 1.5 assists and 1.9 rebounds per game. Gadzuric appeared in 32 games for the Bucks last season and averaged 2.8 points and 2.9 rebounds in 9.8 minutes per game.

BOSTON — Olympic snowboarding champ Shaun White suffered a left ankle injury that will keep him from competing in the Skate Open ISF Skateboarding World Championships this weekend in Boston.Event spokeswoman Katie Trotsky said Tuesday White's representatives report he rolled an ankle while training and won't be able to participate in the two-day 2010 Dew Tour event. However, he will be in NBC-TV's broadcast booth for the vert finals Saturday.

FOX CHAPEL — Amateur golfer Sean Knapp and Butler Country Club professional Rob McClellan are second and third, respectively, after the third round of the Frank B. Fuhrer Jr. Invitational, which was played Tuesday at the Pittsburgh Field Club.Knapp, a member of St. Jude Golf Club in Chicora, carded a 70 to total 206 after three rounds while McClellan fired a 69 for a score of 207.John Aber of Allegheny Country Club remains the leader with a score of 205 after his round of 70.Treesdale Golf & Country Club's Joe Boros is tied for eighth place (215), Pine-Richland graduate Mike Van Sickle tied for 15th (219) and John Aubrey Sr. of Aubrey's Dubbs Dred tied for 18th (222).The final round is scheduled to begin at 7:30 a.m. today.

BUFFALO TWP — The three-day Firecracker 100 Late Model racing event begins Thursday at Lernerville Speedway.Here is the weekend schedule:• <B>Thursday: </B>Pit gates open at 4 p.m., grandstand gates at 5. Hot laps are at 6:50, time trials at 7:15, heat races at 8, followed by last chance showdowns and a $6,000-to-win 30-lap feature. Joe Patrick Band performs in the parking lot after the feature.• <B>Friday: </B>Hot dog eating contest at 1 p.m., judging for best tailgate party and camp site at 3. Gate openings, time trials, heat races and feature same as Thursday. Fireworks display and Vanessa Campagna concert follows the racing.• <B>Saturday: </B>Weenie roast and horseshoe contest at noon, Ms. Firecracker Pageant at 2 p.m. Pit gates open at 3, and a driver autograph session is at 4. Grandstands open at 4 p.m., hot laps at 6:50, heat races at 7:30, followed by Uncle Sam 30 nonqualifiers race and Firecracker 100.

SLIPPERY ROCK — Former Lock Haven University player Lisa Rentel was named assistant women's lacrosse coach at Slippery Rock University.Rentel was an assistant coach at Division III Lycoming last season. She was team captain at Lock Haven her junior and senior years.SRU finished 7-10 last season, its best record since returning to Division II competition in 2007.

GROVE CITY — Grove City College graduate Derek Kruse was named to the third team of the College Division Academic All-American squad for cross country and track and field.Kruse took second in the high jump, 1,500-meter run and 1,600-meter relay at the PAC Championships this spring and was the Wolverines' Most Valuable Performer for 2010.He achieved a 3.93 cumulative grade point average while majoring in molecular biology.
