PITTSBURGH — A doctor wrote prescriptions for addictive painkillers and cough medicines to female patients in exchange for sex, including one woman who died of an overdose, according to charges brought by a state grand jury.

Dr. Michael Vogini, 54, of Gibsonia was arrested today on a charge of drug delivery resulting in death, and other charges alleging he illegally prescribed drugs.

Nobody returned a call to the Pittsburgh office of Vogini, who is a doctor of osteopathic medicine. He was jailed and unable to post $500,000 bond after his arrest.

The grand jury found that Vogini provided prescriptions for addictive painkillers and cough medicines to at least six female patients in exchange for sexual favors from 1999 through 2008. The sexual encounters occurred at the patients' homes, hotels and the examination room of his office.

A 47-year-old woman who overdosed at home in May 2006 had been a longtime patient of Vogini's and suffered from depression for more than a decade.

At her last office visit four days before her death, Vogini wrote 16 prescriptions for the woman, including anti-anxiety medications, central nervous system depressants and seizure medications, Attorney General Tom Corbett said.
