HARRISBURG — Pennsylvania's tax amnesty program is neared its goal of raising $190 million in back taxes and penalties on its final day.

Tax scofflaws had until midnight Friday to take advantage of the state's amnesty program. After that, delinquents will be slapped with an extra 5 percent penalty on top of what they already owe.

Gov. Ed Rendell on Thursday said the program had brought in $180 million since it began in April. The administration plans Monday to reveal a preliminary total collected.

Under the terms of the program, those who owe taxes can pay them off plus half the accrued interest without penalties.

The program covers all taxes gathered by the state, including income, sales and corporate taxes.

Officials say Pennsylvania is owed more than $2 billion in back taxes.

HARRISBURG — State wildlife officials say the Susquehanna River island known for a 1979 nuclear accident is now the only known site in Pennsylvania where bald eagles, peregrine falcons and osprey are nesting near each other.The Pennsylvania Game Commission said Friday that a pair of bald eagles joined the others on Three Mile Island when they built a nest in the spring.Peregrine falcons are considered endangered in Pennsylvania, while bald eagles and the osprey are threatened.Exelon, the owner of the island's nuclear power plant, says the falcons are nesting on the reactor building, the ospreys are atop a meteorological tower and the eagles are in a tree.The reactor was the site of a partial meltdown in 1979.
