BUTLER TWP — The young boy who had head injuries Thursday afternoon after he slipped on a diving board and hit his head at the Alameda Park swimming pool is in stable condition this morning.

Six-year-old Jared Chantz of Summit Township was to undergo additional tests today at Children's Hospital in Pittsburgh, a family member said this morning.

The boy was attending the park's weeklong summer camp, said Gary Pinkerton, director of the Butler County Parks and Recreation Department.

The pool was crowded at the time of the accident shortly after noon. One child said he thought the boy did a flip on the board and fell.

Within moments of Jared being pulled out by a lifeguard, several other lifeguards were providing help. Calls immediately went out to ambulance and police.

"As soon as this accident happened, our emergency plan went into effective,"Pinkerton said. "It went very well."

The pool was cleared of some 100 children while the boy was pulled from the water. Minutes later, township police and a Butler Ambulance Services crew arrived.

An ambulance took the boy to the park's old softball field where the helicopter landed and took him away.
