A Centre City Summer Jam featuring free concerts will take place Friday in downtown Butler.

The event is planned for 6 to 10 p.m. in the parking lot at the corner of East Cunningham and South Main Streets (the former Woolworth property).

The first band, Black Nugget Marinade, will perform at 7 p.m., and the band Mind's I is scheduled to play at 8:30 p.m.

In addition to local performances and other activities, food will be available and nearby businesses will have extended hours.

The event is sponsored by businesses and Butler Downtown, the revitalization program working to bring new energy and vitality to the city's central business district.

A second similar evening is planned for Aug. 13.

SLIPPERY ROCK — Solo canoe owners, manufacturers and interested visitors can meet Friday at Cooper's Lake Campground for the third annual Western Pennsylvania Solo Canoe Rendezvous.The weekend will include clinics, test paddling and conversation. Solo canoes are designed and manufactured for a variety of purposes including whitewater, tripping and freestyle paddling. OIL CITY — The fourth annual Oil Region Indie Music and Art Festival will take place from 1 to 9 p.m. Saturday on Seneca Street.The festival will start with a drum circle at noon in Pipeline Alley, then offer continuous original music on two outdoor stages all day.
