NEW CASTLE — Cranberry Township's Rick Stimmel finished in a fourth-place tie by firing a 144 in the two-day GC Supply Inc.-Club Car Tri-State Open Tuesday at New Castle Country Club.

Stimmel fired on 73 Tuesday after carding a 71 Monday. Barry Evans of Berry Hills Country Club won the event with a two-round score of 139.

John Aubrey Sr. of Aubrey's Dubbs Dred tied for 11th with a 147 while placing third overall in the senior event.

WASHINGTON — The Pittsburgh Pirates optioned first baseman Jeff Clement to Triple-A Indianapolis and designated left-hander Jack Taschner for assignment.The moves came after Tuesday night's 5-2 loss to the Washington Nationals.Clement batted .189 with a homer and seven RBI in 45 games for the Pirates. He started 30 games at first base but was in a 1-for-17 slump.Taschner was 1-0 with a 6.05 ERA, eight walks and 22 hits allowed in 19Z\c innings. He was reinstated from the 15-day disabled list after missing time with a strained left hamstring.

LOS ANGELES — A 3-year-old girl whose skull was fractured by a line drive during batting practice at Dodger Stadium was scheduled for surgery Tuesday.The girl's injury Monday is not believed to be life-threatening but it was not clear if she would have any long-term disabilities, said Dodgers spokesman Joe Jareck.The accident occurred when Dodgers catcher Russell Martin hit a line drive in the stands near third base, hitting the girl and knocking her unconscious, Jareck said. The girl was sitting with her father, who rushed her to the first-aid station. The fire department transported her to a hospital.
