Requin Tech Tours show behind the scenes of sub
PITTSBURGH — On select Sunday mornings this summer, Carnegie Science Center will offer visitors the chance to go behind the scenes of the USS Requin, a Cold War-era submarine docked on the Ohio River outside the Science Center.
Requin Tech Tours will take place from 9 to 11 a.m. on June 13, July 11 and Aug. 8.
Led by Science Center staff, participants will learn how the USS Requin crew faced challenges underwater, explore unrestored compartments and climb up the conning tower to see the periscope, sites rarely open to the public.
Due to the submarine's structure, Requin Tech Tours require full mobility, and tour size is limited to 12 people. Cost is $12 for members and $15 for nonmembers per session. To register, call 412-237-1637.
Other opportunities exist for visitors to experience the USS Requin in addition to the Tech Tours.
An unusual Submarine Memorial will kick off the summer season at the Science Center on Sunday. Beginning at 10 a.m., veterans of the Requin Base will toll the bell once for each submarine that is on "Eternal Patrol" and will cast flower petals on the water. The Marine color guard from Three Rivers leatherneck Detachment 310, Marine Corps League, will perform the gun salute. Admission to the submarine will be free all day.
Visitors wishing to go on a self-guided tour of the USS Requin may do so daily from 10 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Sundays through Fridays, and from 10 a.m. to 6:30 p.m. Saturdays through the summer. The submarine tour is included with general admission to the Science Center; admission to just the submarine is $5 for walk-ups.
The main building is open from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Sundays to Fridays and 10 a.m. to 7 p.m. Saturdays.
Regular general admission is $17.95 for adults and $9.95 for children ages 3 to 12. Omnimax films are extra. Parking is $5 for nonmembers.
