ALTAMONTE SPRINGS, Fla. — The Slippery Rock University women's tennis team earned its first berth in the NCAA Division II national quarterfinals with a win over St. Cloud State (Minn.) Wednesday.

SRU (22-5), ranked 34th nationally, defeated St. Cloud State 5-3 during the round of 16 competition at Sanlando Park.

The Rock was scheduled to face fourth-ranked Lynn (Fla.) (24-3) at 9 a.m. today in the quarterfinals.

Sophomore Dunja Drmac recorded the duel-ending point for The Rock when she closed out a 4-6, 7-5, 6-1 victory at No. 3 singles.

Senior Laura Handy won 6-4, 6-1 at No. 1 singles and Knoch graduate Chelsea Gibson, a junior, won a 6-2, 2-6, 6-4 decision at No. 4 singles.

SRU won two of the three doubles matches.

Other quarterfinal matches today pit Barry (22-3) against Armstrong Atlantic (30-0), California (Pa.) (24-5) against Hawaii Pacific (20-4) and BYU-Hawaii (30-0) vs. Northwood (18-1).

Semifinal matches will be played at 9 a.m. Friday, with the national championship match set for 9 a.m. Saturday.
