HARRISBURG — Sen. Arlen Specter had twice as much cash on hand at the end of April as did his challenger in the Democratic nomination to run for U.S. Senate in Pennsylvania.

Campaign finance reports released this morning showed the fifth-term incumbent Specter with $5.8 million heading into the final three weeks before the May 18 primary vote.

The man trying to unseat Specter, U.S. Rep. Joe Sestak, had $2.9 million. Combined, the men spent more than $6 million in April as each began running TV ads to raise their profile with voters.

Specter raised $278,000 after refunds, while Sestak raised $132,000 during the period.
