Rock tennis in nationals
WEXFORD — The Slippery Rock University women's tennis team blanked Bloomsburg 5-0 in the NCAA Division II Atlantic 2 Regional championship match at Oxford Athletic Club in Wexford Saturday.
SRU (21-5) earned a berth in the national round of 16, which begins Wednesday at Sanlando park in Altamonte Springs, Fla.
SRU will face St. Cloud (Minn.) State on Wednesday.
It is the third trip by the SRU women's squad in the past nine seasons. Losses to Bloomsburg in 2007 and 2009 forced The Rock to settle for runner-up regional finishes.
Laura Handy and Sarah Lynch each had a hand in two of SRU's points.
Handy teamed with Dunja Drmac to win 8-4 at No. 1 doubles and Handy also defeated Katie Hasyn 6-1, 6-1 at No. 1 singles. Lynch won 6-3, 6-1 at No. 2 singles against Laura Sullivan to clinch the 'Race to 5' format. She also teamed with Janelle Krantz won 8-2 in the No. 3 doubles match.
Chelsea Gibson (Knoch) and Jessica Hilborn won 8-4 at No. 2 doubles.
