Special weekend events take wing at the aviary

Mom can picture herself in the sand with a golden plover in the new Grasslands exhibit at the National Aviary, and it's all free for moms who are accompanied by a paying child on Sunday, Mother's Day, at the aviary.

PITTSBURGH — A World Environment Day Celebration will take place from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday at the National Aviary, 700 Arch St.

Bird encounters, environmentally themed children's activities and a trunk show with items from Women of the Cloud Forest will be available.

For Mother's Day on Sunday, the aviary will offer free admission for moms with paid child admission.

Activities will include feeding the lorikeets, strolling through the new Grasslands exhibit and watching the penguins frolic and swim.

Admission is regularly $12 for adults; $11 for senior citizens; $9.50 for children ages 2 to 12 and free for children younger than 2.

Hours are 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Mondays through Saturdays and noon to 5 p.m. Sundays.
