PITTSBURGH — A city police officer's son was charged with assaulting a 13-year-old boy, and the officer's possible role is the subject of an internal investigation.

Officer Gladys Rowser was reassigned to administrative work until the internal investigation of the April 21 assault case wraps up, Police Chief Nate Harper said Friday.

Rowser was not charged with a crime after an initial review by the Allegheny County district attorney, but that could change, and she will face departmental discipline, Harper said.

"There will be internal charges" that could result in a suspension or other penalties, Harper said.

Rowser doesn't have a listed phone, and the police union did not return a request for comment.

Authorities said the investigation stems from a confrontation Rowser's 18-year-old son, Stephon Stewart, had after losing his cell phone on a school bus. Stewart called the phone, and the boy who answered demanded a reward for its return.

Harper said Rowser drove her son to a public housing complex to meet the boy. Stewart allegedly jumped out of the car and punched the boy, who struck his head as he fell, Harper said. The boy was hospitalized for two days but has recovered, Harper said. Police did not identify him because of his age.

Stewart was charged with simple assault.

The victim's family and other children standing nearby claim Rowser flashed a badge, called herself the "chief" and might have grabbed the boy before her son punched him, Harper and Commander Rashall Brackney said at a news conference.
