Here is a simple question.

What is the fair wage you feel teachers/educators should receive in order not to strike?

At what point do you say that you are at a competitive wage for the area. To be honest I have heard that teachers do not make a good living and I find that very insulting. I believe most make enough to have a comfortable lifestyle. I think we all know as we are told teachers have not chosen this career to be rich.

So then why strike. Unfair working conditions? Unfair wages? Unfair healthcare costs?

To be fair the average teacher makes what? 40,000-50,000 per year. Now keep in mind most don’t pay healthcare coverage costs. To the average worker that with a family that would cost what….$500 a month ¦so that’s another 6000 a teacher would make.

So lets say the average teacher makes 45000 + does not have to pay the 6000 that most do. That bring the total to 51000. Now this teacher works 10 months a year. So that would be 40 weeks per year. That is 1600 hours of work. 51000 divided by 1600 =’s $31 an hour.

That is 4x minimum wage and half as much as any county’s median income. So I don’t understand the whole we don’t make a good living or are underpaid. Before anyone starts with the teachers grade papers at home or putting extra time. I do as well to continue my education in technology and I assure you my job is important as well. But that comes with the territory.

There are a lot of worse things teachers could be doing and making a lot less and would have more stress.

Now with out any supporters of teachers getting upset. Please explain how the above entitles you to complain about your circumstances. Please keep in mind lots of people make less and our salary as well and take there work home to keep there jobs and live with the stress that there job could go bye bye anytime.
