Messer HR lifts SRU, 4-3
SLIPPERY ROCK — Slippery Rock High School grad Billy Messer hit a game-winning three-run home run in the bottom of the eighth inning in the Slippery Rock University baseball team's 4-3 decision over Lake Erie College (Ohio) Sunday afternoon at Critchfield Park.
The Rock (25-21) scored all four of its runs in the eighth frame, including Adam Jury's RBI-single before Messer came to the plate.
SRU reliever Colin McCoy earned the win after giving up one earned run on three hits, striking out two and walking two in five innings of work.
SRU's men's team had four NCAA Division II provisional qualifying performances at Saturday's Ashland Alumni Invitational.Kevin Jewel won the 800 meters in 1:52.00. Phil Rector was third in 1:52.89. Both were provisional qualifying times.Chris Warning threw the discus a season-best 51.19 meters and Joel Peters had a personal-best hammer throw of 54.58 meters. Both were qualifying figures.Ethan Isoldi won the 1,500-meter run in 4:02.58.
