Crews unclear if anyone trapped in burning apartments

WAYNESBURG — Firefighters have been battling a large fire this morning at an apartment complex run by a housing authority in a southwestern Pennsylvania county.

Greene County emergency dispatchers say it's unclear if anyone is trapped in the fire reported about 6:50 a.m. today at the Avalon Court apartments in Waynesburg, which is about 40 miles south of Pittsburgh.

It was not immediately clear how many units are in the complex, how many are directly affected by the fire or how many residents might have been endangered.

Dispatchers say there are no confirmed reports of trapped residents and the coroner has not been summoned.

The Greene County Housing Authority operates the apartments, but officials there were not answering phone calls this morning.
