PITTSBURGH — A severe storm system with high winds moving eastward across Pennsylvania knocked out power to thousands of customers Friday.

The storms hit the Pittsburgh area between 3:30 p.m. and 4:30 p.m., and about 90,000 customers total have lost power.

Duquesne Light says about 36,000 customers lost power in Allegheny and Beaver counties. Allegheny Power says nearly 54,000 of its customers lost power, most of them in Westmoreland and Washington counties.

HARRISBURG — U.S. Senate candidates in Pennsylvania have more than $18 million cash on hand as the campaign heads into the final month before the May 18 primary vote, according to finance reports released Thursday.The Democratic incumbent, Sen. Arlen Specter, raised nearly $1.2 million during the first quarter, bringing his campaign total to $9.1 million.U.S. Rep. Joe Sestak, running against Specter, brought in $441,000 during the January-March period. Sestak also transferred $4.2 million from his House campaign account for use in his Senate run, leaving him with about $5.2 million in cash.Republican candidate Pat Toomey collected more than $2.3 million during the first three months of the year, including a $150,000 transfer from another committee, and began April with $4.1 million in the bank.Details on fundraising by the other major-party candidate, Republican Peg Luksik, were not immediately available.

HARRISBURG — State Rep. Bryan Lentz is now unopposed for the Democratic nomination in a suburban Philadelphia congressional district.A Commonwealth Court judge upheld a challenge of Teresa Touey's nominating petition on Thursday, leaving her eight signatures short of the 1,000 that she needed to qualify for the May 18 primary ballot.Another Democratic candidate withdrew from the race earlier this month.At stake is the seat currently held by U.S. Rep. Joe Sestak, who is challenging U.S. Sen. Arlen Specter in the primary.Lentz is expected to face Republican former U.S. Attorney Patrick Meehan in the general election.

WILKINSBURG — Police near Pittsburgh say the mother of an 8-year-old boy who brought heroin to his elementary school has been arrested.Wilkinsburg police say Chynita Young, 25, was arrested Thursday in connection with drugs found on the boy at Turner Elementary School.Young has been arraigned on charges of endangering the welfare of children and corruption of minors. She's being held at Allegheny County Jail on $75,000 bond. It could not immediately be determined if she had an attorney.A teacher saw the boy fumbling with something in his pockets on Tuesday morning.Officials say they then found he had 60 bags of a white substance; tests later turned up heroin residue in the bags.Police say the child will not be charged.
