STROUDSBURG, Pa. — A fiery crash has the United States Postal Service sifting through a load of scorched letters to alert customers they might be missing mail.

A truck hauling mail from New Jersey to New York crashed in northeastern Pennsylvania on Wednesday, and now postal employees in Scranton are going through the load of mail looking for return and delivery addresses.

Postal service spokesman Ray Daiutolo said employees are going through the mail by hand looking for hints about where the mail came from or where it was headed.

Bulk mail, as well as registered or insured mail, is the easiest to track. But personal first-class letters or cards are a bigger challenge.

Daiutolo said the postal service does everything it can to inform customers of lost mail, but in some cases, it might be impossible.
