CHARLESTON, W.Va. — Massey Energy says boosting production elsewhere should replace most of the production lost at the West Virginia coal mine where an explosion killed 25 and left four missing.

Massey says in a regulatory filing today that it expected the Upper Big Branch mine to yield 1.6 million tons of coal for the rest of 2010. The company expected $91 a ton, or nearly $146 million in revenue.

Most of the mine's idled employees will transfer to other operations, but not all of the Upper Big Branch production can be replaced. Massey had about 200 employees before the blast.

Massey says it can't predict when the mine will reopen. The mining equipment is self insured and Massey says it doesn't carry business interruption coverage at the mine.
