Along with the latest media storm I would like to compare the Priest and the Defense Lawyer. I was wondering if it was at all possible for the things I have heard in the media happening in the Catholic Church without any prosecutions pending for the allegations mentioned. From what I know, if you are a practicing Catholic there could be a loophole in the process where the law was not notified about abuses. This would happen if the knowledge of abuses were shared in the act of confession. Due to the nature of confession being secret the abuse could not be revealed. Remember that if a thief tells a Priest in confession that he has stolen or if a murderer tells the like he has committed murder the Priest is bound to not reveal these actions. It all mirrors the our very own law system where the Defense Lawyer is concerned. When a defendant confides in his lawyer all the detailed facts of his thievery or murderous actions the Defense Lawyer can not reveal this information. The Defense Lawyer is also bound to this and it is called Client Lawyer privilege.

I can only discern the reason abuses such as those the media mentions be that certain Priests were not prosecuted within the statute of limitations was because these abusive Priests took advantage of the confessional.

If there is concern that the Catholic Church be reformed because of these abuses then so most the way the court system treats the Defense Lawyer. I do not see a difference in the two societal positions

It is from these two comparisons that either the media cease the position on the Priests or prepare and promote the same media storm for what Defense Lawyers know.
