SRU gets DH sweep
The Slippery Rock University baseball team swept a double-header with Gannon on Saturday by scores of 7-4 and 10-9.
The second game was decided when Carter Haponski belted a run-scoring single in the bottom of the seventh inning.
Slippery Rock High School product Billy Messer collected a two-run single in the game and Adam Jury had three RBI.
The offensive highlights were in support of winning pitcher Justin Thomas, who allowed two base runners in two innings of relief work.
The first game saw Messer go 3-for-3 with two RBI and two runs scored.
Senior right-hander Don Pugliese earned the win after starting and allowed four earned runs on eight hits in a complete game. He struck out nine and walked one.
Track and FieldThe Rock's Jen Harpp shattered her own school record and posted the fastest time in the nation in winning the 10,000-meter run at the Raleigh Relays at 34 minutes, 45.44 seconds.Her previous mark was 35:21.22.
Women's LacrosseCasey Quinn scored three goals in SRU's 19-9 loss to East Stroudsburg.
SoftballSRU split a double-header with No. 11 Indiana (Pa.), losing the first game 5-1 before winning 8-6.Jessica Kortz had three hits and three RBI for The Rock in the nightcap, including her sixth home run of the year. Jordan Zeunges added three hits for SRU (10-7) as IUP fell to 18-3.
