Obama, Medvedev plan to wrap up arms treaty
WASHINGTON — The White House says President Barack Obama will call Russian President Dmitry Medvedev to work out details of a treaty reducing their nations' stockpiles of nuclear weapons.
The conversation this morning between the two leaders should be the final step in reaching agreement between the world's two biggest nuclear powers.
The deal — if ratified by Congress and the Russian Duma — is expected to cut the number of warheads to roughly 1,500 on each side. It would replace the 1991 START accord, which expired in December.
