BRADDOCK — One person was killed this morning after two trains crashed, causing part of one to derail near U.S. Steel's Edgar Thompson Works east of Pittsburgh.

The Allegheny County Medical Examiner's office confirmed the fatality, but offered no other details.

Emergency dispatchers had said a dog was summoned to search for a body after the engineer of one train couldn't be found after the crash about 5 a.m. today.

U.S. Steel spokeswoman Erin DiPietro says at least one of the trains is owned by Union Railroad, which is part of Transtar, a U.S. Steel subsidiary whose trains serve the company's plants.

But she could not comment on reports and news video that one train was reportedly pulling empty cars away from the plant while another was hauling iron ore pellets to the plant in Braddock, a few miles east of Pittsburgh.
