CHIGNIK LAKE, Alaska — A woman who lived in Slippery Rock until August was found dead Monday in her new hometown, an apparent victim of an animal attack.

Candice Berner, 32, of Perryville, Alaska, was found outside Chignik Lake where she was running. Alaska State Troopers are investigating the possibility that she was killed by a pack of wolves.

A spokesman for the Alaska Medical Examiner's office says an autopsy could be performed today. The Cunningham Funeral Home in Grove City is handling funeral arrangements, but no obituary information is yet available.

An Alaska State Troopers news release said the department received a call about the death at 7:27 p.m. local time. People on all-terrain vehicles discovered her and scared away wolves, according to published reports in Anchorage.

Berner was found off a 7-mile gravel road leading to the community's air strip. She was an itinerant special education teacher with the Lake and Peninsula Borough School District in Alaska. She had worked for the district since August, but just started with the school in Chignik Lake this week, according to the Anchorage newspaper.

Before moving there, she worked for Slippery Rock University. She earned both her master's and bachelor's from the university and taught in California before moving back here.
