PITTSBURGH — A Pittsburgh-area man turned himself in to police after seeing tearful televised pleas from the daughters of a hit-and-run victim.

Police have charged 54-year-old Alonzo Cotton of Pitcairn with aggravated assault and leaving the scene of an accident in the crash that has left Ernestine Ross in a coma.

Cotton says something hit his car but he didn't know what it was. He was jailed Wednesday on $25,000 bond.

Attorney Jim Sheets says Cotton turned himself in after seeing Ross' crying daughters on television, asking the person involved to come forward.

Sheets says Cotton heard a thump while driving in that area Sunday night but didn't see anyone. He says Cotton continued on his way because he was in a bad neighborhood.

Ross' family says she is hospitalized in a coma and unable to breathe on her own.
