PITTSBURGH — A Pittsburgh police officer responding to a report of an armed robbery outside a high school has shot and killed a suspect.

Police say late Wednesday night they received an emergency call from someone who said he'd been robbed at gunpoint near Schenley High School in the upscale Shadyside neighborhood. They say a female officer found the male suspect and was assaulted. They say during the assault the officer fatally shot the suspect, whose gun was recovered at the scene.

The three-year veteran officer has been taken to a hospital for treatment of a broken nose and a concussion.

The suspect didn't have any identification on him. The Allegheny County medical examiner's office is handling his body.

Police say the robbery victim wasn't injured.
