Twins, Hudson, sign 1-year deal

MINNEAPOLIS — The Twins sure aren't acting like a small-market team these days.

With a new ballpark set to open in April and a core of talented players in their prime, the Twins have shed their frugal ways.

The latest addition came late Thursday night when they agreed to a $5 million, one-year contract with second baseman Orlando Hudson. He joins a list of new faces that includes shortstop J.J. Hardy and slugger Jim Thome. And the team is in negotiations with catcher Joe Mauer on a lucrative long-term extension.

The team's payroll already projects to over $90 million for next season. General manager Bill Smith says the new revenue at Target Field and a supportive ownership have prompted the more aggressive approach.

In other moves:

• The Colorado Rockies have finalized a $1.3 million, one-year contract with 38-year-old infielder Melvin Mora, who spent the last 10 seasons with the Baltimore Orioles.

He will back up young slugger Ian Stewart at third base, a position where he played 809 games for Baltimore. The versatile Mora has played every infield and outfield position in his career.

In 2003, he made the AL All-Star team as an outfielder and won the AL Gold Glove award at third base the following year.

Mora is a career .278 hitter who began his career with the New York Mets in 1999.

• Reliever Kevin Gregg agreed Friday to a $2.75 million, one-year contract with the Toronto Blue Jays, a deal that could be worth $11.5 million over three seasons.

Toronto has a $4.5 million option for 2011 or an option for 2011 and 2012 that would pay $8.75 million over two seasons.

Gregg was 5-6 with 23 saves and a 4.72 ERA for the Chicago Cubs last year.

The 31-year-old reliever has 84 saves over the past three seasons with the Cubs and Florida Marlins.

• Catcher Yorvit Torrealba and the San Diego Padres have agreed on a one-year contract worth $1.25 million, a person familiar with the negotiations told The Associated Press on Friday.

The agreement is subject to the catcher passing a physical, the person said on condition of anonymity because the deal had not been finalized.
