Tamburitzans offer scholarship chances
Robert Vukic of Cranberry Township performed in more than 100 shows a year while he was a member of the Duquesne University Tamburtizans, the longest-running live stage show in America.
"And I can honestly say that I enjoyed each and every one of them," Vukic said.
The Tamburitzans is a nonprofit organization that promotes the cultures of Eastern Europe through music, song and dance. The performers are students who receive scholarships to attend Duquesne University in any degree program.
Auditions for the Tamburitzans are coming up on Feb. 3 and 4 at the group's Administration Building in Pittsburgh.
Vukic recalls his audition for the exclusive troupe.
"When I auditioned in February 1974, the preparation for your individual audition was extensive; you had to be focused, rehearsed, poised and confident," he said.
He auditioned in the instrumental music, vocal and dance portions and remembers being excited as well as nervous.
"But I was reminded that I was doing what I loved and just to have fun and perform," Vukic said. "I was able to relax and the audition went well."
He was offered a spot on the Tamburitzans team and participated for four years.
"In many ways, it was a life-changing experience," he said. "College usually is, but being in the Tamburitzans adds a level of experience that cannot easily be attained, experience in teamwork, pushing yourself to gain new capabilities, discovering where your own personal 'ceiling' is — and is not!"
Vukic said he will always cherish his experience.
"The precision, teamwork, artistry and quality of performance was consistent and the joy derived from it seemed endless," he said.
Students are now being sought for the 74th season of the Tamburitzans. More than $15,000 in scholarship aid is granted to each performer.
If travel to Pittsburgh is not possible, an applicant may submit a 15-minute VHS, DVD, or mini-DV audition by Feb. 2. Mail recording to Tamburitzans Administration Building, 1801 Blvd. of the Allies, Pittsburgh, PA 15219-5915.
